PLATITUDES
Attitudes galore
extrapolated from any angle or degree
with pious, one-sized endings
to fit all.
Experts at it - addicts, aficionados
and novices;
whether individual, consensual or innate
they all deal in preachy mechanisms
to disseminate and suit wishful endings:
to console or convince the audience
of the desirability of stated outcomes
or implicit assumptions:
believe this, be happy, agree with me;
don’t rock the boat, canna/can’t do
imbibed at mothers knee by 3 years old:
tones of reassurance, threat, anxiety
in turn, ricocheting down the generations
via every mother’s mother, ad inf:
unspoken fears, societal pressures
and the conditionings of ancient pasts.
“All will be well!”
- sotto voce...we will make it well.
You will make it safe.
In other words: we are not safe, not well.
So the old thoughtform reappears
regurgitating it’s perennial mantra;
however poetical or well-meaning
it still bears the message of compliance
senselessly, on automatic;
irrelevant, inappropriate and out-dated,
out of sync with evolutions open ends.
It’s loaded with innuendo and oughts.
We should, we could, we might
Implying we cannot.
Impossible to differentiate it from self-righteous gibberish,
sidling around bushes, issues, points
- what is a point for, afterall,
if not to go around -
without definition or clarity of expression
- admixed with niceties, fantasy, hopes, fears, beliefs
and the relentless need to project, fix and conjure secure finales.
Platitudes are the answer!
Conjoining civil and secular social mores
to missionary intention!
The human mind a big-mouth
unlikely to keep shut!
