BREATHING THE SEAS
The Seas breathe us:
their abundant bio-matrix
sustaining the web of elemental life,
of air and water, freely itinerant,
carried by storm and current
round and around the rolling world
held steady
by gravitational spin and drag;
the play between mass and momentum.
From algae and phytoplankton
to colossi of the Deeps
they breathe the thirsty sky, the sun
alkaline-loving, carbon-drinking;
creatures implicit.
Sea-levels fluctuate, land-masses shift,
their edges weathered, mountains worn
whilst the spirit-level of Ph balance
in blood and salt water
maintains equilibrium against the odds;
as extinctions bloodied fools
hot for the demise of all
betray their lineage and mandate,
forsaking the children’s children
- for dirty pennies and pride.
