ELECTION TIME

I know - lets Vote!
This is the self-respecting
and responsible thing to do, huh!
Though I know plenty who see no point.
And not for laziness or disinterest.

There’s a list of names
with an identikit reel of zombie faces
all looking the same:
open mouths blabbing,
managing to smile while they preach,
eyes glassy, far too fat.
Which equates with seats in government
and the salaries and status that go with it.

Campaigning usually boils down to dosh.
As does motive, for most.
Oh dear, the dears!
How slick they get at promotion.
(and how sick they must be of it…)
All the policies, issues and spin
to catch the voters eye.
It usually boils down to dosh:
- tax relief, benefits, job perks,
serving personal Agendas
around security and prejudice;
what goes on in each street and wallet.
Put a nice face on it so the voter
can sleep at night and that’s that.

Things like wars and famines
are other people’s business
(long as they stay remote
- on the tele screen….)
as is this fuss about the environment.
That’s the affair for oddballs
and the next generation.
I do my bit, I put my plastic
in the correct bin, afterall.
Things like disasters, natural and un
are beyond our little scope.
Here I am, good citizen
voting for Mr Right.

Governments juggle how to survive
with their exploding populations
and the inevitable impossibilities
of constant economic growth,
while clutching for very life
onto the democratic principle
- for want of what other options?
Nepotism? Tyranny? Anarchy?
Little wonder those that can
run away to the wild places
and many who can’t, go crazy.

Nation states vie for limited resources,
bicker over territory and boundaries,
building walls, fences, protocols
while amassing the requisite armaments
for peace-keeping
and so-called deterrence.
All this, having to be worded in,
vested in demo-Speke.
No time is left for things like bugs
and trees?

Yet, the homo-species IS savvy.
In its heart - and it HAS one -
it knows that small IS beautiful,
and the real work and wisdom
lies in the grass-roots,
comes from the children
and the passionate groups and individuals
serving and nurturing the Whole,
seeing the bigger picture
the long-term effects.

Tackling those ruling elites
with their “deep state” invested interests,
on their collective ecocidal trajectory
with the hope that reason and evidence
may convert their jargon and rhetoric,
to sense, proves forlorn.

All it seems to result in is energy wasted, morale depleted, time lost.
Gandhi's principles validated.
Violent resistance only strengthens!
Stay put, refuse to budge, react.
Smile, weep, keep sane.
Wise virgins attend to the work in hand!plant seeds, light candles
and tend the beloved Earth.
