The Longer View
It was a blink in the world’s eye, ago
reading the Lorax to the little ones;
saluting the mood, getting the point
as the Pluto brigades sang
and grew their hair;
Silent Spring, Small is Beautiful burst out
Dylan Thomas and Bob, Luther King
Vonnegut, Salinger, Lessing, Watts
Heidegger, Baez, Burgess, Lorenz
Nabokov, Plath, Carson, Sendak,
Attenborough…whale savers,
CND protesters, pacifists, liberals
Black and Counterculture
Civil rights-ists, environmentalists,
with every activism, from saving trees, anti-war/vivisection,
to peace and gender movements,
along with the incipient dangers
of subversive reaction, extremism,
and, it seems, ecocide.
So where did all this get us?
Does the species ever really learn?
Do we actually evolve?
In the trajectory from the indigenous:
purist innocents, savants, alpha fish
close and wise to the Earth
and it’s stories,
on to contemporary Yo-yo Ma, Carlsen
Banksy, Allen, Stoppard, Hawking
Mandela, Gyatso, Katsioulis
and on, in every field of endeavour
the names, hidden heroes
and shining stars of today.
What does that indicate
but sublime abilities and potential
to heights of exponential expression:
The way-showers and pathfinders
of today.
Everyone else is collectively entrained, entailed, entangled
willy nilly, randomly, unknowing;
by the very fact of his groupie-kind
each one carrying the lineage onwards
and, mayhap, promising the future
with further apogees of empyrean wisdoms:
peacefulness, sustainability..and creative loving.
