Which is nothing like cancel, my dearie!
Nor does it remove an offending item,
out-dated intention or bit of clutter
from existence.
It is just a personal wish, a flip of switch
that renders the evidence invisible,
into storage. Dementia’s absentia.
For posterity or purgatorial judgements
like...out of sight, out of mind,
no need for current consideration:
putting the rule-book in the cupboard,
the actual law into unspoken abeyance
whether due to connivery, carelessness,
chance or lack of use;
while it still lurks intact in a cloud or file,
in memory or the statute books.
Without any formal abrogation, reform
or, by dint of consensual representation,
duly witnessed, signed. proclaimed
- unless dismantled, pronounced dead,
it still exists, indelible.
To cancel, is official. Authorised.
A deed sanctioned by consultative law
and cemented by consent.
A divorce, not adultery.
Some might say, honourable
others, expedient.
Mr Policeman is it’s proof and arbiter,
the Law-makers, it’s designer,
Mr Anyman, with a vote, funds or gun
the wherewithal.
