SQUATTING RITES

Nothing right about it;

erstwhile, innocent ways of indigenous yore,

when no-one owned anything;

It was all God’s land

and people were nomadic

or itinerants,

following herds and seasons,

to find occasional spots to stop - for safety, refuge, rest:

then to scavenge, hunt and forage;

discovering how to plant, harvest, thresh and store:

next: to build, make pots, sew skins, make fire…

 ancient practises of survival

to this day

in our squalid urban poverties

versus grossest affluence.

The first stage was to simply compare, compete,

around potable water and resource - shade, shelter:

with the instinct to freely take

and subsequently, exclusively to claim.

This led to structuring along natural boundaries;

hills, valleys, rivers, outlooks,

to eventually construct fences

and barriers,

then with stone or brick:

 precedents, followed by legal rules to authorise:

Whata story and trail of securing roots, territory and edibles - next tools and weapons ongoingly;

as neurons and practice evolve, even to this day.
